Consulting

For the past two decades, Sean has provided services to a variety of clients as a consulting meteorologist, focusing on forensic meteorology. He also has consulted for the broadcast industry on the importance of visualization technologies for broadcast meteorologists.

As one of only 250 active Certified Consulting Meteorologists (CCMs) certified by the American Meteorological Society (AMS), he has demonstrated high standards of technical competence, character, and experience and has passed a rigorous written examination, as well as an oral examination before a national board of examiners.

The CCM designation is granted only to those who demonstrate a broad background in meteorology together with detailed knowledge in a particular field of specialization, while also demonstrating exemplary qualities of character and devotion to high professional standards. CCMs are highly regarded by their peers in meteorology and are considered experts in the application of weather information to a host of practical challenges ranging from specialized forecasts to engineering design support and expert testimony on weather-related court cases.

Since achieving his CCM certification in 2003, Sean has consulted on a host of cases for the legal and insurance industry ranging from slip-and-fall and other personal injury cases to major industrial cases with losses exceeding a million dollars.

In addition to past weather research and records retrieval and analysis, Sean provides advanced forensic meteorological services, including preparation of detailed reports and expert affidavits, review of client-supplied file material, and interpretive chart and visual aid preparation. He also is available for expert witness testimony and pretrial deposition.

His experience working with past weather records includes spending two years as the service climatologist for the Southeast Regional Climate Center, where he oversaw requests for weather and climate data and had the unique opportunity to spend a week completing specialized User Services Training at the National Climatic Data Center (now the National Centers for Environmental Information) in Asheville, North Carolina, where he gained first-hand knowledge of the types of products, data, and services the center provides for a variety of applications, including litigation and insurance purposes. Sean routinely relies on these products and data in his forensic consulting work.

Sean also helped organize and deliver a short course for the AMS titled Forensic Meteorology: Principles, Practices, and Procedures and is a past president of the Association of Consulting Meteorologists (ACM).
